With the rags of democracy, in the last two decades an authoritarian model has been consolidated in the country, which has banished the basic property of life in democracy, which is the alternation of power, which also makes the elites swing. Today various groups face each other, make moves on the board, but unite in the distribution of privileges and quotas to maintain the model, even with custom-made elections. The Bolivarian Revolution, after 20 years, he succeeded in cornering some elites and replacing them with others. The castling of any refoundation trick that, in the Venezuelan case, has meant the bankruptcy of the country with the largest proven oil reserves, just on the cusp of the end of the fossil fuel era.

During the first years of the 2000s, Venezuela registered its historical peak in income from the sale of oil. Hugo Chávez began his government in 1999 with the good fortune of the international energy market. The oil basket, which averaged 16 dollars per barrel, doubled in five years and did not stop there. At around 88 dollars a barrel at the beginning of 2008, it jumped to 146 dollars.

It experienced a fleeting drop in 2009 due to the global financial crisis, to then rebound from 2010 and reach the 103 dollars per barrel that the commander could caress in his last years of life –and government–, before dying of cancer in 2013 , without imagining –or perhaps yes– that the gasoline that he gave away for years and the barrels with which he built his geopolitical strength in the region would be needed later. But with that flow of income and still some popular drag, the populist leader achieved something more important for his consolidation. Chávez twisted the Constitution that he promoted in 1999 to ensure his permanence. The 2009 constitutional amendment, which allowed indefinite re-election in all elected positions, annihilated alternability.
